Piazza of San Domenico

Like the nearby Piazza of Santo Stefano, the Piazza San Domenico is also paved with river stones. It was created to accommodate the large crowds that gathered to hear the preaching of the Dominicans. It also celebrates the famous founder of the begging order, Dominic di Guzman, with a statue of the saint atop a column. In the back of the piazza there is a stone and bronze column: it was erected by Guido Reni to commemorate the end of the plague epidemic that wracked the city.

Also found here are some interesting tombstones to famous jurists, similar to those in the piazza adjacent to the church of San Francesco.
