Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi
The old Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi was founded in 1300 as a church for the order from which it takes its name. On the front is a portico with slender elegant columns.
There are three naves on the interior, a typically Gothic structure. The brick decorations in the apse are particularly charming. The interior houses splendid works of art like the “Maestà” by Cimabue. There are traces of frescoes from the mid-fourteenth century as well as several other paintings.
The basilica has always been the heart of the city’s musical traditions: in fact, the church often holds classical music concerts. In the 17th century there were four organs here. Today only one remains, built in 1900.
