Temple of Portunus (Fortuna Virilis)

Forum Boarium

The national registry office (anagrafe) of modern times is built on the site of the Portus Tiberinus, the ancient river port to the south of the Portus Tiberinus, the ancient river port to the south of the Forum Holitorium.

Next to it stands the rectangular Temple of Portunus (god of ports), better known as the Temple of Fortuna Virilis, founded in the 5th or 3rd century BC. Over the ages the present building, which dates from the 1st century BC, has undergone a series of restorations. Built of tufa and travertine, both temples were covered with stucco decorations.
