The Basilica was built in the second half of the 2nd Century BC, when the city was embellished. No doubt it is the most important public building in all of Pompeii.
It was the Courthouse and the center of the economic life of the city. Its plan was rectangular, and it had three naves, with the main access point being from the Forum. At its far end was the tribunal, the place where magistrates sat, accessed by a wooden staircase.
